THEOLOGICAL DISCLAIMER

This website does not advocate the ordination of women to the priesthood or the episcopacy. It adheres strictly to the vision proclaimed during the historic 1988 Inter-Orthodox Symposium convened by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople held in Rhodes, Greece, that expresses the desire that one “diaconate in general (male as well as female)  [be] restored in all places in its original, manifold services (diakoniai) with extension into the social sphere, in the spirit of the ancient tradition and in response to the increasing specific needs of our time.”  [The Place of Women in the Orthodox Church and the Question of the Ordination of Women (Ecumenical Patriarchate, Istanbul, 1988) monograph 10.]  The Rhodes symposium in 1988 was convened as the result of a proposal initiated in Chambesy, Switzerland (1986) at the Third Pre-Conciliar Pan-Orthodox Conference, one of the series of meetings in preparation for the forthcoming “Great and Holy Council of the Orthodox Church.”
